This year, your family has likely been spending a lot more time at home. While this new lifestyle may be essential to everyone’s health, it can also leave you feeling restless or boxed-in. However, with more time at home on your hands, it makes sense to invest in an outdoor living space. With a few equipment rentals and a can-do attitude, you can improve your backyard, giving you more usable space to enjoy.

What to Include in a Backyard Improvement Project

1. Install a Patio

One of the best ways to encourage outdoor activity is to lay down a patio. This gives you an area to arrange furniture, a fire pit, and potted plants to create a relaxing and inspiring space. If you’re considering pavers, start by blocking out the patio space and digging up the grass, weeds, and a few inches of dirt. Flatten the soil using a rented plate compactor. Once you’ve laid down landscape fabric, continue with the gravel and pavers. Consider marking the borders with a short retaining wall.

2. Design Your Landscaping

Sloped land can benefit from terraced gardens that are built into retaining walls. If you’d rather a more whimsical, woodland landscape, plant saplings around the far edges of your backyard.

Remove the sod and plant a vegetable garden in an empty corner of the lawn, and surround it with chicken wire to keep local wildlife away. To improve soil conditions, you may need to rent an aerator to churn up the lawn or a fertilizer dispenser to sprinkle nutrients on the grass.

3. Add a Water Feature

Larger backyards could become spa-like retreats with the addition of a pond. Once you’ve marked the perfect location, dig up at least a foot of dirt. You’ll need to excavate a second, smaller tier inside of this, measuring about 6-12 inches deeper. Once you’ve compacted the base, lay down a liner before filling the pond and installing the pump and filter.
