If you rely on a private water supply system, you’ll need to have the water tested annually. However, there are instances where testing is necessary outside of routine inspections. Here are a few of these situations.

When to Have Your Water Supply System Tested

1. Damaged Well Cap

The well cap creates a seal against a variety of contaminants, including fertilizer, manure, motor oil, and insecticides. If the cap recently sustained damage, such as from a storm, get it repaired quickly and schedule water well testing. Even small mammals can fall down the well hole if the cap is broken.

2. Septic Tank Leaks

When a septic tank becomes overloaded with solid waste, floatable matter, wastewater, and contaminants such as coffee grounds and paper towels, it can crack. Older septic tanks are especially vulnerable to cracking due to years of wear and tear. If the tank is relatively close to the well, it can contaminate the water supply system with coliform bacteria from raw sewage.

3. Severe Weather

Floodwater can pick up a variety of pollutants as it flows through your property, including auto fluids, fertilizer, and herbicides. If the soil around the well cap isn’t graded, the risk of flooding-related contamination increases.

4. Frequent Illnesses Among Family Members

When family members experience frequent gastrointestinal illnesses, your water supply system could be to blame. Both E.coli and salmonella in coliform bacteria cause vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea. Nitrates found in fertilizers and mammal waste can also make babies under six months old sick because they interfere with blood oxygen levels.

5. A Recent Move

If you recently relocated and your new property includes a water supply system, have the well inspected and the water tested. Comprehensive well testing not only checks for coliform bacteria and nitrates, but it also looks for oil, solvents, gas, herbicides and pesticides, heavy metals, paint thinner, and minerals. Testing lets you know whether the water flowing from taps in your new home is safe to use.
