Land clearing prepares a blank canvas for a new construction project or makes a property more usable and visually appealing. It’s also a major undertaking that requires some heavy equipment. Most contractors use a combination of the following tools.

Which Tools Are Used for Land Clearing?

1. Brush Mower

Brush mowers are similar to lawnmowers, except they’re much more powerful. Models can be self-propelled, also known as walk-behind, or towed. The brush mower removes overgrown greenery, from thick weeds to saplings, up to three inches thick.

2. Chainsaw

Land ClearingA chainsaw can break up especially thick weeds and shrubs, so they’re then manageable for a brush mower. It’s also used to cut down small trees and the limbs of large trees.

Since it’s a handheld tool, it can easily be taken throughout the property, which makes clearing faster.

3. Pole Saw

This tool serves a similar purpose as the chainsaw, but it’s attached to an extra-long handle to make it easier to chop down tree branches and overhanging brush that would otherwise be out of reach. It’s also a safer option because it doesn’t require climbing any trees to cut down limbs.

4. Pickaxe

If you have large stones on the land you’re clearing, a pickaxe is needed. This handheld tool has a large chisel head made out of metal attached to a wooden handle. It’s used to smash hard stones into smaller pieces. Once the stones have been broken apart, they can be removed in easier-to-handle sizes.

5. Excavators

When clearing out large swaths of land, contractors typically use an excavator to quickly remove various obstructions on the property. It can come with multiple attachments that serve different purposes. The grapple grabs onto small trees, brush, and logs, while the stump puller removes deeply embedded tree stumps. The rakes gather rocks into a convenient pile, so they can be loaded into trucks.
