Why Do I Get Weeds If My Lawn is Sprayed Regularly?

Good question, the short answer is that it has been too rainy.  Homeowners typically hire GreenTec Pest Control, Inc. to have their lawns sprayed every two months.  The general goal is to provide the lawn with fertilization and to attain control over weeds, disease and lawn damaging insects.  The herbicide that is applied works either by topically burning the weed or poisoning it by having the roots pick up the toxin.  These products are not persistent in their composition and usually break down to an inert ingredient so that there is little or no chance of water supply contamination.  The time for this to happen depends on the product and how GreenTec Pest Control, Inc. elects to mix the chemical.

Usually what happens is that a healthy, thick, properly watered floratam lawn keeps weed seeds from germinating because they don’t get down to the soil.  Weed seeds are always blowing around the neighborhood or being transported in by walking on the grass or having your lawn cutting company inadvertently act as a vector and delivering the seeds in when they cut your grass.  When the lawn is sprayed the herbicide kills the weeds while the other products in the spray address fertilization and control of insects and disease.  If it rains too much or too soon after the spray is applied, there is a risk that the herbicide will wash off the leaves or get watered in past the root line.  The rain also helps to wash the seeds down to the soil line and then germination takes place.  The weeds start growing even though the lawn is sprayed.

If it rains after your lawn is sprayed, don’t fret.  Wait two weeks and if you still have weeds, call GreenTec Pest Control, Inc..  (727) 847-6733 and we will come out and respray for free.
