For over a century, Disney® has provided toys, games, and entertainment to generations of people around the world. While many of these vintage toys are relatively common, some are highly sought after by Disneyana collectors—many of whom are willing to pay a premium for especially rare items. Whether you’re just getting started or rounding out your collection, here are a few things you should know about collecting Disney memorabilia.

3 Things Collectors Should Look for in Rare Disneyana

1. Limited-Edition Items From Specific Parks

Every Disney park in the world has unique stuffed animals and mementos, which are usually produced in limited quantities. While vintage toys produced for the mass market may be valuable, pieces of memorabilia created for a specific time and place will almost always catch a collector’s attention. If you’re visiting a Disney park, picking up a few of these limited-edition items can be a sound investment in your future collection.

2. Unopened Items

vintage toysLike any vintage toy, unopened Disney products in their original packaging always carry additional value. Even relatively common products featuring marquee characters can go for thousands of dollars at auction. If you’re browsing a collectibles shop or an estate sale, it pays to keep an eye open for unopened Disney toys.

3. Less-Common Characters

Toys, books, and clothing featuring Donald Duck® or Mickey Mouse® are fairly common, which usually makes them less valuable than products advertising less-common characters. Vintage plush toys of the 101 Dalmatians®, Dumbo®, or other less-celebrated characters are often in high demand. Many of these items can still be found in antique stores, vintage shops, and estate sales.
