If you have a private pool, it’s likely the go-to spot to relax and entertain a few friends. Practicing proper swimming pool maintenance helps keep the structure sound and water clear year-round, ensuring the investment’s appeal and function. Here’s what homeowners should know about caring for a pool.

Do:

Check the chemicals.

The chemicals in your swimming pool keep bacteria and algae growth under control, so the water is hygienic and safe. These chemicals should be checked with a testing kit every few days.

Chlorine should be between one to three parts per million, as anything stronger irritates the skin and lungs, and a lower level is ineffective. Additionally, the water’s pH should be between 7.2 and 7.6. A basic level will make the chlorine ineffective, and high acidity will degrade pool materials, like plaster and vinyl.

Keep it clean.

swimming pool maintenancePerform regular swimming pool maintenance to keep the water clear and swimmable. Clean the surface every day to remove floating debris, like leaves and bugs, which can clog the skimmer basket and filter. Empty the skimmer weekly and change the filter every six months to remove small particles and prevent clogs that contribute to bacteria growth.

Don’t:

Run the pump too much.

The pool pump circulates water, pushing it through the skimmer and filter to remove debris and keeping the water from getting stagnant. The pump should run for a few hours each day. However, using it too much will lead to premature and excessive wear on the parts, causing the pump to fail or encounter issues.

Delay repairs.

If the pump and filter aren’t working, scheduling immediate repairs will prevent larger issues. These broken components will allow debris, algae, and bacteria to accumulate, creating a toxic environment that’s unsafe for swimmers. Additionally, if the pool’s lining is cracking, peeling, or chipping, it may start leaking water from the structure and harm the surrounding greenery.
