The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many companies to start remote work, even if they’ve never done it before. Although a constant video conferencing setup may be uncharted territory for both employees and employers, it’s the standard of working for the foreseeable future. If you’re a business owner or manager, it is important to guide employees who are adjusting to remote work. Here are some management techniques to implement during this period.

How to Manage Your Remote Workers

1. Give Employees Clearly Defined Goals

Since it’s easier to become distracted while working from home, productivity may diminish as employees get used to their new environment. However, a recent study shows that 73% of remote employees work harder at home.

Although it can be tough to control your employees’ home environments, it’s possible to set them up for success by giving them clear goals and deadlines.

2. Establish Guidelines for Remote Work

Video ConferencingOne of the biggest challenges of working from home is the convergence of home and work life. Employees who thrive while working in an office setting may find it difficult to maintain structure during remote work. Even if your company is known for flexibility, establishing guidelines from the beginning can help maintain productivity during the work day.

You can start by setting guidelines around communication. Video conferences can be held each day to check in on employees and ensure that they have what they need to work successfully.

3. Organize Virtual Company Gatherings

Even if employees are regularly communicating about work through audio and video conferencing, they may still feel isolated during this time of uncertainty. While working from home, more social employees lose the ability to have casual conversations with coworkers during breaks and lunch. Organizing company gatherings such as virtual happy hours or brief, informal check-ins can bridge this isolation gap.
