Rekeying your locks is often preferable to outright replacing them. The process is simple, cost-effective, and will maintain the safety of your home. A locksmith will replace the springs and pins inside the cylinder and create a new key. However, most people only consider making this change after a break-in. Rekeying after certain situations will help to prevent intruders from gaining access to the house.

When Should You Rekey Your Home?

1. After Losing Keys

Even the most careful people lose their keys. Usually, they will get a spare from their spouse or a hiding space and having a copy made over the weekend. But there is still the possibility that someone can find the key and gain access to the home.

2. Buying a Home

RekeyBuying a home is an exciting prospect. Though the previous owner handed over their keys, their friends, neighbors, and family members may have spares. Rekeying will ensure that the house becomes yours entirely.

Even when purchasing a newly constructed home, realtors and construction workers have copies. Given the number of clients they both have, they're likely to lose keys on occasion.

3. Completing Home Renovations

When under renovation, you'll have to give your keys to the contractors so they can have access to your home while you're at work. They will probably make multiple trips back and forth every day for the paint or equipment they'll need to complete the job. By the time the project is over, the lock's internal components may have been loosened by the overuse. A locksmith can replace the lock if necessary. If the lock is still working, rekeying should be done to err on the side of caution.

4. Keys Stopped Working

Over time, exposure to the elements can wear down a lock, including its internal components. Due to use, the teeth of keys will also wear down, making them less capable of opening the door. Rust and erosion can also compromise them both. To maintain security and convenience, schedule a rekeying with a locksmith every five years.
