Pregnancy is a joyous, exciting time, but it also entails hormonal shifts that can affect oral health. Gum disease, in particular, is a common issue during pregnancy. Learn more about what you can do to stay healthy with these frequently asked questions.

A Guide to Gum Disease & Pregnancy

Why are pregnant women more susceptible to gum disease?

Shifting hormone levels raises a pregnant woman’s risk for gingivitis and periodontitis. The body also has more exaggerated responses to infections and blood flow increases, making oral care vital during this time.

What are the symptoms?

The most common symptoms are inflamed gums, which may appear swollen and feel tender. They may bleed during brushing. The teeth can also be sensitive, so some women have difficulty chewing food. In severe cases, tooth loss is a concern.

How can I prevent it?

gum diseaseThe best defense is proper oral hygiene and regular checkups with a dentist. Brush twice a day, floss daily, and maintain regular cleaning appointments. Your dentist can reverse gum disease more easily if they catch it early.

What can gum disease lead to?

Damaged gum tissue may need to be removed, but in severe cases, pregnancy tumors can occur. These large lumps are found in the inflamed area. Tumors may bleed and crust, and eating and talking become difficult. Although not usually cancerous, they’re uncomfortable and may need to be removed. They typically go away after birth.

Studies have also linked chronic gum disease to premature birth.

Can it be treated?

Besides good oral care, vitamins A and C can help keep bacteria at bay. Gargling with sea salt can also bring down inflammation, but severe cases need care from a dentist and hygienist. They will remove plaque buildup and may prescribe oral antibiotics or mouthwash to combat infections. Severe cases may require surgery to repair affected gums.
