Halloween is an exciting time of the year, providing an opportunity to kick off the holiday season and dress up as your favorite character. However, for those with pets, the sudden change in routine can increase stress and put their health at risk. Use the following do’s and don’ts to ensure they receive the right care and avoid needing an emergency veterinarian visit.

Do:

Limit seasonal decorations.

New materials are instant attractions for curious pets, but they might present a choking hazard if parts come loose. Keep decorations out of reach. It’s safer to decorate outdoors, where your pet will be less likely to see the hanging cobwebs and stringing lights.

Get a loose-fitting costume.

veterinarianWhile pet costumes are cute, make sure the material doesn’t interfere with their ability to breathe or move. Strings, ribbons, and Velcro straps are just a few features that can cut off circulation or tangle around their legs. If you want to dress your pet up, veterinarians recommend looking for a larger size, or simply tie a bandanna around their neck for a festive appearance.

Don’t:

Leave pets near the front door.

The increase in activity during trick-or-treating makes it difficult to keep track of your pet, especially when the door is open. Rather than risk them getting out, keep your pets at the back of the house, either in a closed room or behind a gate.

Let pets sample your candy.

Many Halloween treats contain ingredients that can be hazardous to your pet’s health. For instance, chocolate contains theobromine, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and irregular heartbeat. If you suspect your pet has consumed chocolate, seek immediate medical care from a veterinarian. Caramel apples feature sticks that can splinter and damage internal organs. To keep your pet safe, hide your sweets in an upper cupboard.
