People tend to think of air pollution as something that only occurs outdoors. However, indoor air can be up to five times more polluted. This is a particular concern in office environments, where many employees spend the majority of their time throughout the week. Therefore, employers should take steps—including arranging for regular HVAC maintenance—to ensure good air quality.

Understanding Your Office Environment

Why Is Indoor Air Quality Important?

Repeated exposure to poor indoor air quality can cause a variety of problems. Many people develop severe allergy symptoms, as well as headaches, sore throat, dizziness, and fatigue. For some, it can turn into more serious respiratory conditions.

Research also shows that employee productivity decreases when working in a polluted environment. Fresh, clean air is important for strengthening the immune system, energizing the body, and sharpening cognitive abilities.

Common Office Pollutants

HVACEvery building has naturally-occurring pollutants that consist of mold, dust, pollen, and bacteria. Chemical pollutants are also present in many items found inside office spaces, such as paint, carpet, furniture, and cleaning supplies. However, inadequate ventilation can exacerbate issues. When a limited amount of fresh air is being circulated inside, the level of air pollution increases.

Your HVAC system is meant to filter out some of these particles. However, if the filter is not changed regularly enough, it will end up redistributing the contaminants instead.

How to Improve the Air in Your Workplace

The EPA suggests a three-part strategy for improving indoor air quality. This involves controlling the various sources of pollutants, making ventilation better, and using technology to trap pollutants and remove them from the air.

It’s best practice to prohibit smoking in and near the building, adopt a frequent cleaning schedule, avoid using toxic chemicals in cleaning products, and address leaks and spills right away to prevent mold growth. Keep the doors and windows open when the weather permits, invest in air-purifying plants, and change your HVAC air filters regularly. You can also invest in a new HVAC unit that contains a built-in air cleaner designed to either trap or kill bacteria and other organic materials on contact.
