If you wear makeup every day, good skin care practices will help you maintain a glowing complexion. But many makeup users make potentially damaging mistakes. Discover a few of the most common below, so you know how to avoid them.

3 Makeup Mistakes That Can Damage Skin

1. Sleeping in Your Makeup

After a long day at work or a night out on the town, you may be tempted to fall into bed without first washing off your makeup. But the longer makeup stays on your face, the more likely it is to harm your skin.

Skin constantly produces oils, which mix with makeup and clog pores. Certain makeup ingredients, including coconut oil, dyes, and chemical additives, can clog pores on their own. Clogged pores heightens the risk of developing acne, blackheads, whiteheads, and overall duller skin. Always wash off your makeup at the end of the day.

2. Neglecting Good Face-Washing Habits

skin careFace-washing should involve more than just a splash of water on the face. Don't use overly hot water, as high temperatures can damage your skin and dry it out. Wet your face with warm water, apply a mild soap and massage it in, and rinse your face thoroughly.

Don't aggressively dry your face with a towel; instead, pat it gently.

When purchasing facial cleansers and other skin care products, select items made specifically for your skin type.

3. Forgetting Sun Protection

Sun exposure is the leading cause of premature wrinkles and skin damage. Makeup may cover your face, but not all products offer sun protection. Choose makeup that comes with built-in SPF; in general, the higher the SPF, the more protection the product provides.

Before applying your makeup, use a moisturizer with SPF for maximum protection. It will not only minimize sun damage but also help the makeup adhere better.
