Garage doors should serve as protective barriers against the elements, maintaining a tight seal and preserving indoor comfort. However, without the proper materials, air leaks will develop and cause internal temperatures to fluctuate. Here’s how to determine if you need new weatherstripping and how to install this protection.

A Guide to Garage Door Weatherstripping

How to Detect a Faulty Seal

Close the garage door and turn off the lights before visually inspecting the perimeter of the panels. If you can see daylight along the edges, there are likely air leaks. An easy way to verify your suspicions is to hold a hand up to the openings and feel for a breeze.

As it dries out, cracks may appear and cause drafts to develop. Test for drafts by feeling along the edge of the seam while the door’s closed.

How to Ensure a Tight Seal

Start by unplugging the garage door opener to prevent accidental movement during the installation. Raise the panels and secure them in place with clamps on either side of the door.

Measure the width toward the top of the opening and cut the material to size. The PVC portion of the weatherstripping should sit tight up against the inside edge of the door jamb to maintain a quality seal.

Measure both sides of the door frame and cut the material to size. Temporarily nail each piece into place and remove the clamps from the door.

Plug it back in and raise and lower the panels to ensure the seal isn’t interfering with the door’s movement. Once the measurements are set, fully secure the material to the frame.
