Whether it’s a wedding, festival, or some other type of outdoor event, sanitation is one of the main issues you must consider. Having enough portable toilets and hand-washing stations is necessary to ensure everyone has access, and the location of these features is also significant. Below are several strategies for what you should and shouldn’t do when laying out your event space.

Do:

Consider service access.

portable toiletsYour portable toilets will arrive on the back of a truck, and the service will remove them the same way. If your event will last for multiple days, your provider must also have access so that they can empty the toilets during the event. This means that you should position the facilities near roads, paths, or open areas that can fit a large vehicle. Also, try to keep them away from main thoroughfares where many people will gather.

Keep them convenient.

While you don’t want your portable toilets to be in the middle of the event, they shouldn’t be too far away, either. If they are hidden, inconvenient to reach, or inaccessible for guests with disabilities, this will significantly impact the comfort of your attendees. Put them within easy walking distance of your central event spaces, leaving enough space to avoid issues with the smell and foot traffic.

Don’t:

Set them away from security.

Unfortunately, portable toilets make an attractive target for anyone trying to play pranks at your event. Without supervision, someone can vandalize or tip over the structures, which is expensive to replace and repair. To avoid this, make sure your event staff can see the facilities so that they can spot any potential trouble.

Ignore the foundation.

Portable toilets can also tip due to weather and environmental factors if you do not set them on a solid, flat surface. Never position them on sloped, uneven, or unstable ground. Also, consider what will happen if it rains; dirt or grass will become muddy and won’t provide enough support. The best place to put the restrooms is on a paved area. If this is not possible, consider laying gravel or sand over your chosen location.
