The color scheme can make or break a kitchen design. However, choosing a palette for the space is one of the more challenging components of performing renovations. What might seem good on paper doesn’t always translate when implemented in real life. Follow these tips to help you choose the right shades when designing your new kitchen.

Do:

Limit your color selection.

Color can add dimension and set the atmosphere of any space. When there are too many competing colors, they can overwhelm the senses and create a chaotic environment. Prevent strained eyes by sticking to a palette of three colors or less. Typically, designers recommend two neutral shades with one accent color.

Review the room's lighting.

Light has a dramatic impact on the overall look of the space. The tone of the light adjusts how the color is perceived. Shades tend to look more yellow under warm-toned bulbs and blue under cool-toned lights.

Additionally, the placement of the fixtures impacts the level of brightness you're able to achieve. With smaller spaces, placing lighter colors closer to the various fixtures encourages reflection, which can make the room feel bigger.

Don't:

Overlook the power of metal.

This sentiment is especially true with gold, brass, oil-rubbed bronze, and black. To maintain consistency, choose the same material for the various metal elements, including handles, fixtures, and lighting.

Focus solely on current trends.

Considering the investment associated with kitchen remodeling, you want a design that lasts for years. However, trends go out of style as fast as they come in. It's best to use popular colors selectively.

Focusing on timeless elements for the base of the layout will prevent you from being stuck with an outdated kitchen, but you can incorporate current trends in features that can be swapped out. For example, bright red light fixtures and stools can add edginess to a relatively neutral space. When trends change, simply swap them out for newer options.
