Fire protection equipment encompasses everything from smoke detectors to fire extinguishers and alarms. Because fire safety is so important, such systems must work without a hitch to protect building occupants. Unfortunately, frequent alarms may become a nuisance. There is a difference between false alarms and nuisance alarms, however. The following is a discussion of these two types of events.

An Introduction to False & Nuisance Alarms in Fire Protection Equipment

What Are False Alarms?

Fire protection equipmentFalse alarms are rare events in which the alarm system activates even though it has not detected smoke or fire. They can occur due to a malfunction in the alarm system or because something else sets it off. For instance, if a prankster pulls the lever and sets off a high school fire bell, this is considered a false alarm. False alarms can also occur due to high humidity levels caused by shower steam or cooking food. Bugs, dust, and other debris in the sensing chamber may also cause them.

What Are Nuisance Alarms?

With nuisance alarms, on the other hand, the system detects smoke or heat and activates, but the situation is considered non-threatening. For example, when an alarm blares due to cigarette smoke or burning toast, it is considered a nuisance alarm.  Nuisance alarms comprise the vast majority of warning events that do not require emergency response.

How Can You Prevent False & Nuisance Alarms?

You can minimize the occurrence of false and nuisance alarms by having your system inspected yearly to ensure proper operation. Also, situate detectors several feet away from bathrooms and kitchens, where steam might set off a false alarm. Clean the sensors regularly of dead insects and dust. Finally, be aware that a heavy electrical drain on the same circuit, such as a vacuum cleaner or microwave oven, might set off a false alarm.
