How Does Your Car's Braking System Work?, Pasco, Washington

If you notice a problem with your brakes, you should have them professionally serviced as soon as possible. Even a minor issue can keep you from stopping at a crucial moment, and understanding how they work will help you identify maintenance concerns. Here’s what to know about your car’s braking system.

Why Does Your Car Need Brake Fluid?

When you step on the brake pedal, fluid is pumped through the master cylinder to the calipers, which activate the pads, causing the vehicle to slow or stop. The brake fluid your vehicle uses is a type of hydraulic fluid that’s pressurized in the master cylinder.

The amount of force you put on the pedal will determine how much pressure is behind the fluid pumped to the calipers. More pressure will force the calipers to move the pads harder and faster against the rotor.

BrakesIf the brake fluid becomes dirty or contaminated, your braking system won’t work as effectively. There are several signs that you may need to refill or replace the liquid, including squeaky brakes, a chemical smell, and difficulty pushing the pedal down.

What Does the Rotor Do?

The rotor is another essential part of the braking system. It’s a large disc that’s bolted to the wheel so that it moves at the same speed and direction.

The caliper and brake pad sit over the rotor, but they don’t touch it. As you attempt to stop or slow your vehicle, the calipers push the pads against the rotor to slow the rotation of the wheels.

Rotors serve two purposes in helping a vehicle stop. First, they help build up the friction that’s needed to stop the wheels from rotating.

The rotor also absorbs the heat that builds up during this process. Without heat absorption, the system’s components will wear down faster and require premature replacement. Some indicators that your rotors need to be replaced include squealing sounds or unusual vibrations when braking.
