A storage unit is an excellent spot to store artwork temporarily. If you have paintings that you’d like to put away, it’s crucial to package them properly. Whether you have too many pieces to keep in your house or you’re using a unit as you change residences, use the following tips to protect your artwork.

How to Store Your Paintings

1. Wrap Them Carefully

Each piece should be meticulously wrapped to protect it from damage that might occur while in transit and to create a barrier from outside elements. If the painting has a frame, tape plastic wrap or a moving blanket securely around the piece.

Add cardboard padding to both sides to create additional layers of protection. If there’s no frame, apply sheets of silicone release paper, glassine, and cardboard to create a secure barrier around the piece.

2. Choose Climate Control

storageSelect a climate-controlled storage unit for further protection of your artwork. Issues such as elevated humidity encourage mold formation, which can permanently ruin the integrity of the painting and the frame. When the temperature and humidity levels are properly regulated, you can easily store delicate, valuable items without worrying that they’ll lose their integrity.

3. Position Them Properly

Don’t place your artwork directly on the ground, even if it’s fully wrapped. Elevate it on a pallet, and place it vertically so that there’s no risk of anything falling on top of it, such as a nearby piece of furniture or a box.

If you need to place it horizontally, take precautions. Never stack multiple paintings on top of one another, and keep them as far away from other objects as possible. Avoid putting them on the ground and increasing the risk of stepping on them accidentally.
