Like other essential appliances, water heaters don’t last forever. Even with proper care and maintenance, they will eventually succumb to wear and tear. Since the only foolproof way to prevent total system failure—and any flooding that may come with it—is by replacing your water heater preemptively, it’s wise to familiarize yourself with the earliest signs of trouble.

3 Warning Signs You Need a New Water Heater

1. Red or Brown Water

If the water that comes out of the hot tap has a red or brown hue, your water heater may be reaching the end of its life. As the interior of the tank corrodes, it releases rust into the water. Once that rust becomes noticeable, the tank has likely corroded to the point that it needs replacing. Since the rust and accompanying sediment can clog the pipes as the water makes its way to the fixtures, it’s best to address sooner rather than later.

2. Diminishing Hot Water

If the appliance’s heating element has broken down, the entire water heater may need replacing.

3. Leaking Water

Leaks are another sign that the tank—or one of its components—has sustained considerable corrosion. Since pooling water can contribute to mold, mildew, and structural damage, it’s important to address any leaks as soon as you notice them. If it turns out a loose or worn fixture is to blame, there may be a simple fix. However, if the tank has corroded, then there’s no way to restore its original condition, and a replacement will be necessary.
