Silver jewelry is beautiful, but it does have an unfortunate tendency to tarnish with age. This darkening effect occurs when the metal reacts with sulfuric substances in the air or on other objects. There are steps that you can take to prevent this from occurring, however. Here are three ways to safeguard the metal.

How Can You Prevent Silver Jewelry From Tarnishing?

1. Clean Regularly

Any type of contaminant has the potential to cause premature tarnishing of your silver. To prevent it from happening too quickly, wipe down your jewelry after you remove it. Your skin’s natural oils can collect on the metal, making it more susceptible to developing the telltale blackish finish. Use a microfiber cloth and warm water, then dry the product carefully. You can also polish the piece on occasion to prolong its attractive appearance.

2. Store Carefully

jewelryThe wrong storage case or material can further increase the likelihood of your metal tarnishing. Avoid using latex, rubber, or wool, all of which can cause a reaction that ruins the appearance of your jewelry. Avoid storing it adjacent to other types of metal, too. Use a box lined with felt designed specifically to hold your trinkets, or wrap the object in a piece of soft cotton instead. When in doubt, opt for a soft material and keep it in a dry location.

3. Treat Early

If you spot a small tarnished spot, treating it promptly ensures that your jewelry will look as good as new. Among the most popular metal-friendly options is baking soda, which cuts through the black tarnish to reveal clean, refreshed silver. For this project, dampen a sponge with hot water and squeeze it thoroughly to remove the excess. Add just a teaspoon or so of baking soda to the sponge, then very gently rub it over the tarnished area. Finish by rinsing with warm water and a mild soap, then dry thoroughly.
