With so much to do before the moving company arrives, it can be difficult to decide where to start. Should you pack the attic first, or start by cleaning out your closet? Luckily, there is a way to implement a method among the madness. Use this week-by-week checklist to stay organized and on-track.

A Comprehensive Moving Task Timeline

Two Months in Advance

Your first task may be challenging, but it will greatly lessen your workload from now on. Figure out which items you won’t be taking to the new home, like a couch that is too large or an unused kitchen mixer. Use the months ahead of the move to sell them for extra cash. For items in poor condition, arrange for a donation.

Now is also the time to start researching moving companies, request time off work, and make plans for pet and child care for moving day. If you have children and are moving to a new school district, make sure to set aside their records when purging your home.

Two Weeks in Advance

moving companyNow that you’ve pared down your belongings, start gathering items that you rarely use and set them in one, easy-to-reach location. From seasonal decor to family photo albums, these will be the first items you’ll pack. If you have a large home, start gathering your packing supplies now and safely storing these items in boxes.

Next, alert your utility companies about your move, and make plans to transfer your services. You might also want to inform the post office, banks, and credit card companies about your change of address.

If you head to the grocery store, limit the perishable items on your list, as you’ll need to consume them all in the next two weeks.

A Few Days in Advance

Unless your moving company will be providing packing services, spend these days safely wrapping your belongings. Take pictures of your rooms both before and after they’re empty, so you’ll have a record of the furniture arrangement and proof of the condition of the home when you left.

Gather extra packing supplies in preparation for moving day just in case. If you’re taking the major appliances, you’ll need to empty and begin defrosting your fridge at least two days before moving day.
