Eye cancer, also known as ocular melanoma, affects thousands of Americans each year. Though the disease often has few symptoms in its early stages, it may eventually lead to vision loss and spread to other parts of the body. To catch it early requires regular testing from an ophthalmologist. Below, learn more about this condition and the treatment options available.

Your Guide to Eye Cancer

Causes

Though the exact cause of eye cancer is unclear, it occurs due to the multiplication of harmful cells within the eye. Research has found a correlation between UV exposure and melanoma growth. Those who are white, light-eyed, or have a family history of certain conditions are also more susceptible.

Symptoms

ophthalmologistSince ocular melanoma forms in the eye’s uvea, or middle layer, you likely will not detect any visible changes at the beginning. However, as the disease progresses, you may notice dark spots on the iris, changes in pupil size or shape, shifting of the eye in its socket, or bulging of the eye. You might eventually experience blurry vision, visual field loss, floaters, and flashes of light.

Treatment

An ophthalmologist or ocular oncologist can diagnose and treat eye cancer. If the tumor is small enough to be operable, your doctor may perform an iridectomy, which is the surgical removal of a portion of the iris.

Alternatively, to preserve the eye and its structure, a radiologist may try radiation therapy, which uses focused proton beams to target and shrink tumors. Laser therapy is another option that involves using infrared light and heat to burn malignant tissue and stop mutated cells from growing.
