Summer is winding down, and the cooler temperatures make it a perfect time to get a jump on car maintenance. While there are many wonderful perks to the longer days and warm temperatures, they often cause extra wear and tear on your vehicle. Use this guide to touch up the areas that tend to take the most hits.

How Can You Ready Your Car for Fall?

1. Inspect the Tires

Well-maintained tires are essential for getting to your destination safely. As the summer heat can increase the tire pressure and evaporate the moisture on the rubber, leading to dry-rot, a full inspection is important to prevent dangerous driving conditions.

After checking the tire tread, fully look over the rubber for any sidewall cracks, bulges, and bald spots. If there aren’t any concerns that could warrant new tires, move on to the tire pressure. Make sure that the pressure matches the recommended PSI found on your driver’s side door or in your owners manual.

2. Replace the Wiper Blades

car maintenanceGood-working wipers ensure your windshield remains clear during times of heavy rain, but extreme temperatures in the summer and winter months can cause them to deteriorate and become less effective. If you frequently have to drive down dirt roads or regularly leave your vehicle parked near construction zones, expect even more wear and tear.

Avoid a decline in visibility by replacing your wipers every fall and spring or as soon as you notice them leaving large patches or streaks of moisture across your windshield. Also, if the rubber or silicon material has degraded, replace the wipers immediately to prevent the metal from potentially scratching the glass.

3. Restore the Headlights

Right now, the sun is probably visible on your way to work and back home each day. Before long, though, you’ll be spending a lot of this road time in the dark. Visibility plays a large part in staying safe on the road, so make sure to inspect the condition of your headlights.

If you have an older vehicle, it’s probable that the headlight covers have developed a foggy coating that blocks a lot of the light emitting from the bulbs. We can clean and polish the lens to clear away the effects of sunlight and oxidization on the plastic. Once they are clear, wax them like normal before applying a protective UV sealant.
