When you have a baby on the way, you want to ensure your home is as safe as possible for the new bundle of joy. The electrical system, in particular, needs to be baby-proofed, so here are a few tips from electricians to follow.

How to Baby-Proof Your Electrical System

1. Cover Outlets

Curious little ones may stick their fingers or toys in wall outlets. Eliminate the risk of electric shock with plastic outlet covers. These durable safety devices easily fit inside outlet holes and are difficult for children to remove. They’re also available in different styles to fit all outlets.

2. Add Sliders

A sliding cover, also known as a self-closing outlet cover, replaces the current outlet plate with one that doesn’t leave open holes for plugs. When a plug is removed, a piece slides over the holes and won’t reopen until you move the cover away again. Even forcing a toy or finger won’t make it slide, providing an effective defense against little hands.

3. Try Outlet Boxes

electricianYou have likely seen outlet boxes on the exterior of your property to protect outside electrical devices. These coverings can be placed over inside outlets as well. There are boxes with two-button release functions that make it harder for a child to gain access.

4. Shorten Cords

Power cords are common around the house, especially near entertainment centers or major appliances, but babies can easily get caught in them or pull on them. If you can’t hide the cords, shorteners can condense their length in a safe box. A cover protects the plug and part of the cord, so a child can’t grab it. You can also wrap up cords in sleeves, which can contain more than one device’s wires.

5. Get Power Strip Covers

Power strips are handy, but they’re just as risky as wall outlets. Look for a cover to mask the entire device. This sturdy plastic box has a thin opening on one side, so cords can be fed inside to the outlets. The cover also shields the power strip switch.
