Invasive wildlife species can cause extensive damage to your landscaping and garden. One of the most efficient ways to protect your property is proper fencing. However, different pests approach your home in various ways, so it’s important to identify which type of fence is necessary for your neighborhood’s wildlife population. Here’s a closer look at how to deter multiple types of wildlife with appropriate fencing materials.

Small Animals

Sometimes it’s just the neighborhood cats and dogs causing problems. A solidly staked, 3- or 4-foot fence is enough to discourage them. For persistent invaders, such as squirrels, choose a mesh fencing material that extends over the top of the garden—especially if trees overhang the area. Avoid barriers with slats or posts, as small animals are skilled at squeezing through tight spaces.

Large Animals

For large animals, a tall barrier is needed. For example, deer are skilled jumpers and may ignore fences of less than 8 feet. As browsers, they’re also attracted to visible food. Use a wood fence to block their vision and make your yard less appealing.

Burrowing Animals

fenceRabbits, gophers, and even coyotes will attempt to dig under fences. To prevent this, extend the installation 1–2 feet below ground.

If you’re using a flexible material, curve it outward to create an underground flap. Known as an apron, this barrier lies just below the surface and will block the efforts of a digging animal. Wood and vinyl are excellent choices for burrowers, but remember to avoid gaps that the smaller species can slip through.

Climbing Animals

Critters such as raccoons and possums don’t hesitate to climb. Choose a material that doesn’t give them any footholds, such as wood or vinyl. Some further discouragement is recommended, though, such as lining the top edge of the fence with a slick material, like sheet metal.

Alternately, hang a loose flap of bird netting where they’re climbing. They dislike its instability and the way it traps their feet. You can also install the fence at an angle with the top edge leaning outward to further discourage climbers.
