A tooth extraction is sometimes necessary to address an impacted tooth, advanced decay, or infection. If a dentist has determined you need this treatment, you might wonder what to expect. Here is a guide to help you prepare.

What to Do Before a Tooth Extraction

During a consultation, the dentist will ask about medication, vitamins, and supplements you take. You may need to stop taking certain drugs, including blood thinners that can trigger excessive bleeding during the procedure. In some cases, you may need to simply switch to a different medication temporarily.

Let them know of any other upcoming surgeries and treatments on your schedule. If you have diabetes, heart defects, thyroid issues, immune system problems, and other chronic conditions, let them know. If you have a condition that can make you prone to infection, they may prescribe an antibiotic to take before the procedure.

If you aren’t feeling well on the day of the appointment, even if you only have a cold, alert the dental office since they may prefer to reschedule.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Simple extractions are for teeth visible above the gums. The procedure often uses local anesthetics. Once the site is numb, the dentist uses a tool called an elevator to loosen the tooth, removing it in one piece with forceps.

Surgical extractions are needed if the tooth is impacted and hasn’t broken through the tissue. For this treatment, you may receive both local and intravenous anesthesia to numb and calm you. Some oral surgeons opt for general anesthesia that will make you unconscious for the duration of the procedure. They then make a small incision in the gum to remove the tooth. In some cases, they may need to take the crown and root out separately.
