What Are Cavities?

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that produces acid, which has the ability to damage your teeth’s enamel. When plaque is allowed to accumulate on your teeth for too long, your enamel can break down, and cavities can form. Cavities are one of the most common health problems in the world.

Inadequate brushing allows plaque to form, which damages your teeth. Some medical conditions, like heartburn, eating disorders, and dry mouth make it more likely that you’ll develop cavities. In addition, snacking on sugary drinks or snacks throughout the day without brushing creates more acid on your teeth. How Can You Prevent Them?

Although cavities are unpleasant, it’s possible to work with your dentist to prevent them. First, make sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day, but preferably after you eat or drink anything but water. You should floss your teeth once a day to remove plaque from the areas between your teeth.

Avoid snacking or drinking sugary beverages throughout the day. Drink your morning coffee in about 20 minutes, then rinse your mouth out to prevent cavities from forming. You should also drink water from the tap whenever possible instead of bottled water, as it contains fluoride that helps make your teeth strong.

Most importantly, schedule a cleaning and dental checkup every six months with your dentist. They can give you further advice to prevent cavities, and a dental cleaning will remove excess plaque and tartar from your teeth.
