Well pumps are essential components that move water from the underground aquifer into a home. However, with multiple varieties available, it isn’t always easy for homeowners to select what they need. Here is a brief guide to help you choose the right water pump for your home.

Different Varieties of Well Pumps

The two main varieties are submersible and jet pumps. Jet pumps are designed to sit at ground level and work by using a stream of water to create suction that drives water up towards the surface. Jet pumps are easy to service since they can be accessed easily. Shallow jet pumps shouldn’t be used in wells deeper than 25 feet, while deep models can work as deep as 110 feet.

Submersible pumps are lowered into the aquifer and won’t work unless there is enough water to completely submerge them. However, if there is plenty of water in the aquifer and you have a deep enough well, you shouldn’t run into problems unless your area experiences overuse or a weather-related drought. Submersible pumps can work in depths as shallow as 25 feet and as deep as 400 feet, making them the perfect option for areas where wells may need to be dug deeper in the future.

Choosing the Best Version for Your Home

Submersible pumps are self-primed and work better for well sources that may experience disruptions from time to time. On the other hand, jet pumps can deliver more water, so they may be better for families with high usage needs.

Regardless of which type you choose for your home, make sure the unit is sized appropriately for your household. As a general rule of thumb, a typical single-family home requires a pump that can deliver about six gallons of water per minute. If you’re concerned about needing more than that, upgrade to a pump with a higher capacity.
