Veterinarians often recommend pets wear an Elizabethan collar, more commonly known as an e-collar, after having surgery or being treated for an injury. This cone-shaped device fits around their neck and creates a barrier that prevents them from licking or scratching the wounded area so that it can heal properly. If your dog or cat has to wear one, it can be stressful for them at first. However, there are a few ways you can make it easier for them to adjust. Here are some tips to help your furry companion feel more comfortable.

How to Help Your Pet Cope With Wearing an E-Collar

1. Ensure the Right Fit

E-collars are not one-size-fits-all. They come in pre-cut or custom sizes. For them to be safe and effective, they must fit animals correctly. As such, it’s important to measure your pet or take them to the veterinarian for help determining what size they need.

The cone should be snug enough around the neck that the animal can’t get it off but loose enough that two fingers can slide underneath. Ideally, it will extend a minimum of 2 inches past the tip of your pet’s nose to keep them from being able to turn and reach the affected area.

2. Prepare Your Home

While wearing an e-collar, pets will often experience a change in vision and hearing. This can make it difficult for them to move throughout the house without bumping into furniture and walls. In rooms that your dog or cat frequently uses, remove obstacles from their path and clear away clutter to give them as much space as possible to maneuver around.

3. Monitor Feedings

veterinariansSome animals have trouble accessing their food and water with an e-collar on. It can create an obstruction and block them from reaching their bowls.

If your pet seems to have difficulty, consider switching to smaller, more shallow bowls that fit in the cone opening. You can also elevate their bowls to make them easier to get to.

4. Be Consistent

Cats and dogs learn to adapt quickly to their surroundings, and most will be fine dealing with an e-collar in just a couple of days. The more consistent you are in keeping the cone on them, the sooner they’ll begin resuming their normal activities with it on. Follow the instructions your veterinarian provides and refrain from removing it unless necessary.
