Whether your office has closed or you’re heading out of town, you may need to transplant your fish and put your aquarium in storage. But to store your fish tank with peace of mind, you’ll need to tackle a few preparatory tasks. Use these three tips to keep your aquarium in pristine condition for the months to come.

3 Tips for Keeping Your Aquarium in a Storage Unit

1. Remove the Filter

storageWhen your tank is fish-free and ready for packing, you’ll want to start by removing and cleaning the filter. This way, you can use it again later. Unplug the device and take it out of the tank and dispose of the carbon piece inside. Then, use white vinegar, warm water, and a filter-cleaning brush to scrub away algae and bacteria. When you’re finished, allow the filter to air dry before packing it in a small box.

2. Clean the Tank

After you’ve emptied the water, there may still be bacteria, algae, and other residues on the inner walls of the tank. Therefore, you want to sanitize the tank to prevent mold and mildew from growing in the storage unit. Fill up the tank with a mixture of vinegar and water to kill bacteria, and let it sit for an hour. Then, empty the tank and scrub away remaining spots with a sponge and all-purpose cleaner. Finally, dry the tank with a rag or towel.

3. Pack the Tank Properly

To protect your tank both in transport and in storage, you’ll need a sturdy box. Make sure the box is only slightly larger than the tank itself, to minimize sliding and jostling. Place packing paper or thin foam on the bottom of the box before slipping the tank inside; tuck some around the outer wall, too. Position more paper or foam inside the tank, followed by the filter, decor, and other tank accessories. If possible, throw in a few silica packets to soak up excess moisture before taping the box and placing it in storage.
