When commercial property owners are looking to rejuvenate their lawn, they often have the choice between laying down sod and hydroseeding. Both provide rapid plant growth, quickly adding curb appeal. The guide below explores both methods, including their benefits and limitations.

The Difference Between Hydroseeding & Sod

What Is Hydroseeding?

In hydroseeding, teams spray a mixture of grass seed, water, and fertilizer directly onto the earth. While the results aren’t immediate, you should start to see new plants sprout within a week. This process is much faster than traditional seeding, generally showing impressive results within a month or so.

Unfortunately, this method only works on bare soil, meaning land that does not contain grass or other plants. This makes it perfect for new construction projects, although you must prepare the soil by tilling up any existing grass first. You must also refrain from walking on the lawn until the grass develops a stronger root system.

What Is Sod?

plantsSod consists of large sheets of healthy grass, held together by roots and a thin layer of soil. After preparing the ground, technicians roll out these strips just like a carpet. Over time, the plants take root in the soil underneath, creating a stable, healthy lawn without bald patches or browning.

Sod provides immediate results, which makes it an extremely popular choice. However, sod is generally more expensive than hydroseeding and the plants must be regularly watered until their root systems develop.
