When the temperature starts to drop, many people notice that their hot showers aren’t as hot as they used to be. This is most often due to the fact that as the ground temperature lowers, your water heater is forced to work harder.

Plumb-Rite Plumbing, located in Kalispell, Montana, proudly provides the entire Flathead Valley area with reliable plumbing help, and they offer these tips to ensure that you get the most out of your water heater this winter:

  • Gas Water Heaters: In order to keep your water at the appropriate temperature, you will need to reset the thermostat and raise the temperature. If you have a gas water heater, look for the small box protruding from the front of the tank. There you will find a small temperature dial with labeled notches. If your heater is set to the recommended 120 degrees, turn the dial slightly to 125 or 130 degrees. Wait a half-hour and then test the water to see if you’re satisfied with the change.
  • Electric Water Heaters: To change the temperature on an electric water heater you will first need to unscrew the small panel on the top of the heater. Once you’ve removed the panel, turn the dial slightly to the right. This can be done while the heater is on, but it’s recommended that you read the owner’s manual for any specific instructions. Test the water before you use it to see if you need to make any further adjustments.
