Halloween is a time for kids and adults alike to indulge in sweet treats. However, the sugar from this candy inevitably clings to teeth, attracting cavity-causing bacteria. Follow these general dentistry tips to keep your family’s smiles shining throughout the festivities.

4 Halloween General Dentistry Tips

1. Be Selective About Sweets

Some candies are more harmful to oral health than others. Sticky sweets like licorice and gummy bears leave behind residue that is hard to remove while hard candies like lollipops can chip or crack enamel if you bite down on them. Enamel is a protective coating for your teeth. If it fractures, teeth become more susceptible to bacteria. Soft, quickly-chewed sweets like chocolate are, comparatively, better.

2. Limit Snack Time

If you eat candy throughout the day, sugar will have more of a chance to linger. Designate after dinner as the time to indulge. Eating stimulates saliva, which helps to rinse away any sweets you may consume. Additionally, kids will brush their teeth shortly afterward when getting ready for bed. Store the trick-or-treating haul in a locked cupboard for the rest of the day to avoid the temptation to snack.

3. Stay Hydrated

Saliva also cleans away bits of food that would otherwise attract bacteria. Encourage kids to sip water regularly. Chewing sugar-free gum can also spur saliva production.

4. Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Maintain good dental care practices during Halloween, brushing twice per day for two minutes and flossing in the evenings. Playing these two-minute videos while kids brush can help them be thorough. After the last Halloween treat is gone, schedule professional teeth cleaning for the entire family. A dental hygienist can remove sticky plaque and tartar more thoroughly. Kids may also benefit from a fluoride treatment, which strengthens protective enamel.
