Schools may be closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but that doesn’t mean your child can’t receive a quality education. Remote learning and learning centers have made it possible for kids of all ages to continue their academic careers. However, that means families need to fill the roles of teachers. Here are a few ways you can reinforce what your child is learning.

How to Ensure a Quality Online Education

1. Set Up a Dedicated Workspace

Kids can be easily distracted when taking classes at home. To ensure your child stays focused, set up a quiet workspace dedicated to learning. Make sure they have the necessary school supplies, including paper, pencils, erasers, books, and water. They’ll be spending a considerable amount of time there, and you don’t want them to develop back or neck pain, so the workspace should be comfortable.

2. Create a Personalized Schedule

As much as students might dislike the monotony of school days, consistency helps them stay on task and work more efficiently. Organize a daily schedule similar to a normal school routine. This should include breaks to stretch, get fresh air, and eat snacks and meals.

Every child has unique needs, so consider their personality. If your little one has trouble focusing for long periods of time, structure assignments and study times in 30-minute increments followed by short breaks.

3. Use Print Materials

They are also more likely to absorb what they're reading on paper rather than from a screen. Include physical textbooks, printed assignments, and reading books in their curriculum.

4. Find Online Resources

Online educational tools and games make STEAM learning more engaging. Many museums are offering free virtual tours, including the Smithsonian, the Louvre, and the American Museum of Natural History. Age-appropriate online activities help students stay engaged and entertained as they learn.

5. Reach Out to Others

Remember that you are not alone during these uncertain times, and many families are experiencing the same challenges with remote learning. Reach out to other parents, your child’s school, or a local learning center to share your concerns and seek advice. When you work together, your children will benefit from a more balanced, well-rounded education and a better sense of community.
