If you don’t plan to use your bicycle for a while, putting it in a storage unit will keep it safe and in top condition. But there’s more to it than simply rolling it into the space. Here’s how to prepare your bike for storage.

How to Get Your Bike Ready for Storage

1. Clean the Bike Carefully

Clean the bike before placing it in the storage unit to ensure it will look its best when you retrieve it later. Wipe it down thoroughly from top to bottom, paying special attention to areas like the frame, handlebars, reflectors, and seat. Use a stiff brush on the wheels, brakes, and chain to gently dislodge dirt, mud, and grime.

2. Inspect for Structural Issues

Use a rust removal product on affected areas as needed, and apply a lubricant if necessary to add moisture to any moving parts. Seek out a climate-controlled unit to avoid unnecessary exposure to humidity.

3. Determine a Storage Method

If you choose to store your bike on the ground, inflate the tires beforehand to prevent them from flattening. Check on them occasionally and add air as needed, especially if you plan to keep the bike in storage for extended periods.

If you’re concerned about the tires, either because they’re vulnerable or older, turn the bike upside down and suspend it from hooks or place it on a rack. You can also put it upside down on the ground, with excess weight on the seat and handles. If you choose to hang it, suspend it by its frame to avoid warping.
