Every homeowner dreams of a vibrant, flourishing lawn. However, many of them don’t know how to make that dream a reality. Here are three of the most common lawn care mistakes and how to avoid them.

What Are Some of the Most Common Lawn Care Mistakes?

1. Mowing Grass Too Short

Some people cut their grass extremely short so they can go a while without mowing again. While this decision may seem convenient, it makes your grass weaker and more vulnerable to weeds.

That’s because longer blades shade the soil from the sunlight that encourages weed growth. To protect your lawn, only cut your grass to about 2 ⅓ to 3 inches.

2. Applying Fertilizer at the Wrong Time of Year

lawn careFertilizer fills your lawn with essential nutrients that help it reach its full potential and stay safe from harsh weather, weeds, and other threats. However, it works best when you apply it at certain times of the year.

Always apply it in the early spring, as your lawn’s roots need a health boost after a long winter. Apply it again in the fall so your lawn can recover from the heat of summer and prepare for winter dormancy.

3. Underwatering or Overwatering

Underwatering leads to brown, dying grass, while overwatering drowns the grass’s roots and deprives them of oxygen. In general, a lawn requires about an inch of water per week.

To maximize your lawn’s health, distribute the water by soaking the grass two to three times a week rather than giving it a more shallow watering daily.

You can water your grass less during weeks with frequent rain. Also, give less water to grass that’s shaded, as the water won’t evaporate as much as it would on grass under direct sunlight.
