An orthodontist not only straightens teeth, but also corrects some skeletal issues.  One common appliance is a Herbst appliance. Below is more information about this appliance, as well as how to maintain it.

What Is a Herbst Appliance?

An orthodontic lab creates this device using plaster models that your orthodontist provides.  The appliance will be cemented, by it’s stainless steel crowns, to 4 molars.  With the crowns in place, the upper and lower crowns will be attached to “arms’.  Four brackets will also be placed on the upper and lower front teeth on the top and bottom jaws.

How Should You Maintain It?

Proper oral care is necessary to ensure a Herbst appliance remains clean and effective. If your child has one, they should brush their teeth and the appliance at least twice a day.  Using a mouthwash rinse after brushing to remove any traces of food is beneficial also. To ensure they do not damage the appliance or brackets,  they should avoid eating hard and sticky foods.

Their orthodontist will need to adjust the Herbst during its use.  Appointments are usually scheduled every 8 weeks.
