When it comes to keeping your teeth and gums healthy, there are a few potential treatments your dentist might recommend. While most people have heard of getting a standard teeth cleaning, scaling and root planing treatments are less well known. Here are some basic facts to help you better understand these procedures.

What You Should Know About Scaling & Root Planing

What is scaling?

Scaling is a process in which your dentist scrapes plaque and tartar—which is what plaque becomes when it hardens—away from the area surrounding the gum line. Notably, this cleaning goes beneath the gumline to address the deep pockets that can form between the gums and teeth when trapped plaque gets out of hand. In other words, it goes deeper than a standard dental cleaning.

What is root planing?

Root planing is a follow-up procedure to scaling in which your dentist smooths out the roots of your teeth to help the gums and teeth reattach. The combination of scaling and root planing helps manage severe gum disease that can eventually lead to tooth loss. Depending on the severity of your plaque and tartar buildup, multiple treatments may be needed.

When are these procedures recommended?

dentistYour dentist will typically recommend scaling and root planing when gum pocket depths reach 4 millimeters or more. Other signs of advanced gum disease, such as excess tartar buildup and gum recession, are also common indicators that scaling and root planing could be necessary.

What should I do after my treatment?

It’s normal to experience some pain and swelling in your gums for a day or so after your treatment. You may be given pain medication for this period. After this, your gums should begin to return to a healthy pink color, and the pockets should decrease in size. Consistent brushing, flossing, and dental appointments will help keep the problem under control.
