After an auto collision, it can feel frustrating to deal with your auto insurer. You might be worried that your rates will increase or you’ll say something wrong. To help you receive the payout to which you are entitled, here are the do’s and don'ts of dealing with your insurer post-collision.

Do:

Contact your agent immediately.

auto collision repair in Honolulu, HIDon't wait to contact your insurer. The longer you wait, the longer it will take to receive a payout. Call your agent as soon as possible to let them know you will be filing a claim. They can then get the paperwork started and prepare to send an adjuster your way.

Visit a doctor.

If you sustained injuries during the auto collision, visit a doctor to document them. It's best to get checked out even if you feel fine. Your insurer won't consider paying for treatments, medical devices, prescriptions, or procedures unless you can show that you're under a doctor's care.

Don't:

Accept a settlement without legal advice.

Consult a lawyer before accepting and cashing any check you receive marked as a "full and final payment." You could be tying your own hands legally if you later learn that you were entitled to more. Discuss the circumstances of the auto collision and your injuries with your attorney, and they’ll negotiate with your insurer on your behalf to get the best settlement possible.

Let your insurer decide where to get your car fixed.

You have a right to decide where to take your car. Many insurers try to steer you to a particular repair facility with whom they have dealt previously. Don't feel pressured to accept their recommendation if you prefer a different facility. It’s your car, so it’s ultimately your decision.
