Clutch repair is a common issue that many owners of manual transmission vehicles will face. Typically, the average clutch should last about 60.000 miles, depending on your driving style. However, stop-and-start traffic wears down this component faster than long highway trips that require few gear changes. Below are several indications that you may need this auto repair service soon.

When Does Your Car Need Clutch Repair?

1. Difficulty Shifting

Once you depress the clutch pedal, the shifter should easily move into whichever position you choose. However, when the clutch mechanism starts to fail, the shifting lever may give you considerable resistance when you try to switch gears. While this is frustrating, it can even be dangerous if you are navigating around curves or through traffic. This often indicates a problem with the clutch's master cylinder. It could also indicate damage to the gears, preventing the teeth from meshing properly.

2. Leaking Fluid

You can spot a leak of hydraulic fluid by looking for drips beneath the car after you start it. This fluid is colorless and has the consistency of vegetable oil, and it will typically be below your engine bay.

3. Sticking Gears

The clutch also contains a friction plate that presses firmly against a flywheel to transfer power from the engine to the transmission. When you press the clutch pedal, the friction plate should disengage from the flywheel, preventing power from reaching the transmission.

However, when there is damage to the connections between the pedal and the friction plate, this will not happen. These components include the clutch cable, pedal linkage, cross shaft, or pivot ball, and your car will stick in the current gear.
