If you have central air conditioning, you have a condenser on your property that is responsible for releasing heat outside. This exterior cooling unit is made to resist the elements. However, winter weather can cause some wear and tear. To make sure it stays in good condition so you can use it next summer, adhere to the following best practices.

How to Prepare Your Cooling System for Winter

1. Schedule an Inspection

If you noticed any performance issues or strange noises toward the end of the cooling season, arrange for a contractor to look at the unit. Whether the problem is a loose component, frayed wire, or refrigerant leak, addressing it early will stop it from becoming a more serious and expensive concern over the subsequent months.

2. Switch It Off

Switch off your AC unit at the source. The outdoor compressor should have an off switch, often beneath a flip-up, plastic lid. If you fail to do so, the system may start running over the winter during unseasonably warm days. This draws moisture over the coils. Later, when the temperature dips again, this moisture could freeze, damaging crucial components.

3. Cover & Insulate

coolingWipe off any dirt, grime, or moisture from the condenser. Remove twigs, grass clippings, and other debris from the coil and vents. Then, cover the unit. You can purchase a ready-made air conditioner cover from a heating and cooling supply store or simply encase it in sturdy sheets of plastic and bind them with twine or bungee cords. Insulate the pipes with foam tubing you can buy at any hardware store.

4. Keep an Eye Out

Check on the compressor every few weeks during the winter to remove accumulated ice and snow. Repair any tears in the plastic and rebind any loose corners. The more mindful you are in the winter, the less likely you are to experience any problems once warmer weather arrives.
