Driving requires your full attention. From running a red light to drifting into another lane, it’s possible to commit traffic violations unintentionally when distracted. A moment of absent-mindedness could result in a ticket or collision. To avoid marks on your driving record and potential accidents, here are a few ways to prevent distractions while on the road.

How to Avoid Distracted Driving

1. Put Your Phone on Silent

Looking down at a phone to send text messages doesn’t only take your eyes off the road. Typing takes one or both hands off the wheel, too.

That’s why texting while driving is banned in 48 states and Washington D.C. Conducting hand-held phone conversations while driving is also against the law in 25 states.

To avoid the temptation to check your phone and potentially commit a traffic violation, put the device on silent. This way, you won’t be aware of missed calls and other alerts until you reach the destination. As an added precaution, leave the phone in a purse or put it in the glove compartment.

2. Ask Passengers for Help

Ask a passenger to send phone calls and texts or check the GPS navigation when needed so that you never take your hands off the steering wheel. Older children and adults can also secure larger pets that aren’t in cages and keep little kids from being rambunctious.

3. Eat Before Leaving

Your car shouldn’t be used as a makeshift dining room. Grabbing food out of a bag or off a plate on your lap or the passenger seat means you have to look down and take your attention off the road. Spilling food or beverages could also catch you off guard, which is why it’s best to eat before you leave or after you reach the destination.
