Wood fencing is a classic landscaping choice that’s suitable for a wide variety of architectural and design styles. Whether it's lightly sealed or stained, it looks great year-round. However, like other aspects of your home’s exterior, maintaining its appearance and structural integrity requires some upkeep. Keep in mind the following tips if you're unsure about how to effectively maintain your wooden fencing installation.

Do:

Clean thoroughly and annually.

Because the structure is outdoors, wood fencing can quickly accumulate grime, mold, mildew, and algae. This is especially true if it has been a rainy season.

Clean the wood fencing at least once a year, or whenever you see buildup. Use a wood-safe cleaning solution and a wire-brush or rags to scrub away dirt. Consider pressure washing more stubborn stains.

Restain or reseal regularly.

To protect wood fencing from moisture and sun damage, make sure to reapply stain or sealant regularly. Every two or three years should suffice for most fences. If you're unsure whether it's time for a new coat of stain or sealant, look at the surface the next time it rains or when the sprinkler runs. If the wood soaks up the water within a few minutes, it's time to reapply.

Don't:

Plant vines or shrubbery nearby.

Slack on repairs.

Repair noticeable damage right away, and continuously check for pest damage. Loose, warped, or cracking planks should be replaced, as should any rusted hardware. If there's a problem with the posts, you'll need to have those professionally repaired to ensure the structure is sound.
