When your preschooler's tugging on your boot straps, asking you to read their favorite story for the fifteenth time in one night, this could be a sign that they're ready to branch out and start reading on their own. It's no secret that kids should learn the fundamentals of reading at a young age, but you should consider that this process doesn't have to be challenging or stressful in anyway. With the right help, and a couple of tips from Reading In Preschool, you can help kids learn how to read by doing little things to guide them on their journey.

  • Don't baby them. Treat them like a big kid. As little ones grow into their age and out of their diapers, it is important to raise your expectations. Help your child enhance their pattern recognition, critical thinking and problem solving skills, by allowing him/her to express themselves through reading comprehension. You can do this by pointing at the pictures, asking questions, listening and discussing the story with your child.
  • What do potty training and learning to read have in common?... As anyone who has any experience with potty training knows, the best way for a child to learn this is by sitting on the potty for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, a number of times throughout the day. Well guess what? It's the same thing with teaching ABC's, numbers, reading and any other thing you want to teach your young preschooler! Repetition and consistency is key. A few of the same flash cards, or a colorful book with a few large words are the best for children ages 2-4. After a few weeks, you'll see that they are in fact retaining this repetitive information and you can go on to some new words. Make potty training a time of the day to look forward to, by using that time to also teach reading and hit 2 birds with one stone!
  • ....And remember, CONSISTENCY IS KEY!
