American and German cockroaches are two of the most common species that you may encounter in the home. While they’re slightly similar in appearance, there are distinct differences that could determine the best method for removal. Here’s what to know so that you can secure timely cockroach extermination.

A Guide to American & German Cockroaches

American

These cockroaches tend to move indoors when they’re in search of warmth, which means you’re more likely to spot them during the winter. They’re the largest cockroach in America, measuring approximately two inches in length, and are reddish brown with a light yellow outline. Females produce two egg cases per week, each containing 16 eggs that can take up to eight weeks to incubate.

While they feed on crumbs and other bits of food, these critters prefer decaying organic matter, which is why granular treatments are often used for cockroach extermination.

German

These cockroaches are notorious for their filth and are continuously on the hunt for food, which means you can experience an infestation at any point of the year. They measure from 1/2 to 5/8 inches long and are light brown with black stripes on their wings. Females produce an egg capsule every six weeks that contains about 40 eggs that take only 28 days to hatch.

With an affinity for warmth, the most likely place for setting up camp is directly under your kitchen appliances. They’ve even been known to get inside of the motors of dishwashers and refrigerators.

These locations offer easy access to food and a ready supply of moisture from nearby plumbing. Cockroach extermination professionals often use baits for treating this type of infestation.
