Granite countertops are popular because they provide a beautiful, natural stone aesthetic and are incredibly durable. However, they still require some basic maintenance, including sealing. Find out why and how often you should seal the counters with the following frequently asked questions.

A Guide to Granite Countertop Sealing

Why does granite need to be sealed?

Sealing the granite helps prolong its life and makes daily maintenance much easier. With a sealant, liquids bead on the surface instead of being absorbed, drastically reducing the risk of stains. It also lessens the effects of etching, or when acidic chemical reactions dull a polished surface.

How often does it need to be sealed?

Granite should always be sealed immediately following installation, but there is no universal timeframe for how often it needs to be resealed. Most installations require it every one to five years.

One determining factor is the color of the counters. Lighter granite is more porous than darker options, so it needs to be resealed sooner. The type of sealant also plays a part since higher-quality products last longer.

What type of maintenance is needed?

Granite CountertopUse a microfiber cloth and water to clear away any dirt and spills every day. Don’t use chemical cleaners or abrasive cloths, as these can scratch the surface and cause unsightly stains.

Besides water, you can occasionally use a stone cleaner with a neutral pH for a deeper clean.

What are the signs a countertop needs to be resealed?

It’s recommended that you perform a water test at least once a year. Drip a small puddle of water no bigger than four inches in diameter on the surface. Let it sit there, and watch how long it takes before the granite starts to darken.

When it darkens, the stone is absorbing the water. If it happens within four to five minutes, it needs to be completely resealed. If it darkens in 10 to 15 minutes, one additional coat is recommended. If it doesn’t absorb water in 30 minutes, the seal is still strong.
