A eulogy is the centerpiece of any funeral service, offering the speaker the opportunity to share memories of the deceased and deliver a final, personal tribute to someone special. But even in the most ideal of circumstances, public speaking can be a nerve-wracking experience for many people and navigating grief at the same time can only make it more so. To deliver a memorable eulogy, consider these three tips.

How to Deliver a Eulogy

1. Make It Personal & Positive

Capture and hold your audience's attention by sharing stories about the deceased. These should serve as examples of the deceased's personality, character, sense of humor, or personal style. Don't be afraid to tell a funny story if that wittiness is in keeping with who the deceased was in life.

Also, focus on the positive. A eulogy—and, by extension, a funeral service—isn't the place to bring up old hurts and recriminations or litigate family disputes. Keep the tone upbeat but respectful.

2. Don't Wing It

funeral servicesEven if you're aiming for a relaxed, almost conversational tone for your eulogy, don't try to memorize the speech or speak off the cuff. Most eulogizers write out the speech beforehand and have a hard copy of it in their hands throughout the delivery; it is reassuring to know the words are right there.

If you're going for something more casual, write out highpoints you want to mention on notecards and have the cards on hand. Not having material to refer to can result in a choppy and hard to follow speech if you lose your train of thought.

3. Rehearse

Take the time to rehearse the eulogy before the funeral service. Run it by a trusted friend or family member and get their feedback on your performance.

Remember to make eye contact with the audience as often as you can, read the eulogy slowly, and practice any words or phrases that might feel awkward or difficult to pronounce. Think of the eulogy not as a public speech but as a way to honor a life well lived.
