Your home is more than just a roof over your head, it’s your safe space and your comfort zone. With ST. Evans, INC. Construction, we understand what it takes to make your house a home.

What is a functioning roof/attic ventilation system and why does it matter to you?

A functioning roof/attic ventilation system works to balance the intake of cool air and output of warm air in the home. Proper attic/roof ventilation systems are vital in order to prevent extensive damage to your home. By updating your attic/roof ventilation system you could save a lot of money in the long run and improve the overall comfort and quality of your home.

How proper home ventilation works: As the wind hits your home it is pulled upward into the vents and into your attic. A properly functioning roof/attic ventilation system pulls air into the attic (through Soffit vents) and allows it to be released at the top of the roof (through ridge vents), resulting in proper air flow and ventilation throughout the home. With improper roof/attic ventilation systems, such as a roof with gable vents, the air is trapped in the attic when the wind stops or changes direction, causing several issues such as mold and mildew build-up. For this reason, and many others, gable vents are becoming obsolete and many contractors are replacing them with Soffit and Ridge vents.

The PRO’S of updating your home ventilation system with Soffit & Ridge vents:

  • Lowers energy costs

  • Extends roof and shingle life

  • Prevents expensive future emergency roof repairs

  • Reduces heat buildup resulting in less cooling costs during the summer

  • Expands attic space for storage

  • Lowers humidity levels in your home

  • Improves air quality in the home

  • Reduces the risk of health issues such as asthma, allergies, and headaches

Signs to look for:

  • Frost on underside of roof or rafters – trapped air in the attic condenses and freezes wood.

  • Waterstained or blackened wood – a sign of mildew or rot

  • Heavily rusted nails – a sign that condensation is forming on metal surfaces

  • Matted down insulation – a sign that the roof is leaking from ice damming or other causes
