While fluid leaks are common, that doesn’t mean they can be ignored. The various fluids in a car keep it running efficiently, and a shortage may lead to a breakdown. Learn how to identify where the leak is coming from, so you can get the appropriate auto maintenance service.

How to Identify Car Leaks

1. Oil

Of all the vehicle leaks, an engine oil leak is among the easiest to identify. Fresh oil is amber, while used oil will be brown or black. It may have a burnt smell and sticky texture.

An oil leak is typically found near the front of a car and may be the result of a damaged oil pan or malfunctioning engine valves, gaskets, or seals.

2. Brake Fluid

You may be more likely to find a puddle near the wheels since brake fluid is channeled around these spots from the brake lines. An auto maintenance technician will check the fluid reservoir for any cracks or damage that lead to leaks.

3. Antifreeze

If you notice a distinctive sweet odor coming from green, yellow, red, or pink liquid underneath your car, it’s likely antifreeze. The leak can be found around a vehicle’s exhaust pipe. Avoid touching the liquid because it can cause eye, mouth, and skin irritations. An auto maintenance technician can diagnose the leak’s source, which may be due to a damaged water pump, radiator, or hose.

4. Windshield Washer

A clear, watery leak may be the windshield washer fluid. However, the fluid can also resemble water coming from a vehicle’s air conditioning system. This fluid usually doesn’t have an odor or color, and a leak is typically easy to repair.
