Event Information

Halloween is fun for the entire family. Kids, adults, and even the family pet can get dressed up as part of the festivities. While your cat or dog might look cute in a costume, there are precautions you should take to ensure their comfort and security. Find out how to keep Fido or Fluffy safe below.

4 Halloween Safety Tips for Pet Costumes

1. Check for Choking Hazards

Decorative costume embellishments like chains or buttons are not always securely fastened. Animals may chew on these items if they come loose and your pet could even choke on them. Steer clear of costumes with small parts. You can remove them yourself if needed.

2. Make Sure They Can Move

Animals aren't used to wearing costumes and may panic if they feel that their movements are constricted. Stay away from costumes that can get tangled up in your pet’s legs, like capes, or clothing that is too tight. You should be able to easily slip a finger between the fabric and the animal’s body.

3. Keep Their Mouth & Nose Clear

catYour pet's nose and mouth should never be covered by a costume, as this can present breathing difficulties. Avoid masks and large headgear, which might slip down due to improper fit. If you notice signs of distress, like scratching at the costume or rigorous shaking to get it off, remove it immediately.

4. Limit Costume Time

Even with the above precautions, you should never leave your cat or dog unattended in a costume. To make the most of their cute look and stay safe, dress them up long enough to snap a few photos and then let them run free. You will have a wonderful memory and your pet will not be constrained by a costume.
